Connecting people on both sides of the border through Reciprocal Giving. An exchange where everyone contributes and everyone benefits. No handouts. No hierarchy.

We are Rancho Feliz

Recognizing the wealth inequity between Mexico and the USA, forty years ago, brothers Gil & Troy Gillenwater traveled to Agua Prieta, Mexico to help the poor. At the same time, they recognized the poverty of purpose existing in their own country. Shortly thereafter, Gil founded Rancho Feliz to address both sides of this poverty equation.

To date, over 28,000 volunteers have traveled to Mexico and fed their souls and improved their own lives by providing housing, education, food and medical opportunities (not welfare) to their less-fortunate neighbors. Rancho Feliz’s reciprocal giving format is a proven solution to our ailing southern border. It makes us all better people. It makes our world a better place.

We believe in reciprocal giving – where everyone walks away empowered.

No handouts.

No hierarchy.

Our Pillars

Rancho Feliz focuses on four areas that support long-term stability and shared responsibility. These pillars reflect what we have learned through decades of hands-on work in Agua Prieta.

Creating educational opportunities
Creating stability through safe homes
Service that works both ways
Meeting needs with dignity

Why Your Investment Matters

When families lack access to education, safe housing, and basic resources, their choices become limited. Many leave not because they want to-but because they feel they must.

Investing in communities like Agua Prieta addresses these challenges at the source. When families have opportunity, stability, and hope, they can build strong lives at home.

At the same time, volunteers, students, and partners work alongside the community, supporting families, building relationships, and making a lasting impact across the border.

This isn’t charity. It’s a long-term investment in people and place.

Welcome to La Hacienda Feliz

When volunteers visit Rancho Feliz, they stay at La Hacienda Feliz, a place created with care and intention. From the beginning, the goal was to offer volunteers a space that feels safe, calming, and comfortable. A place where people giving their time to the community can truly rest.

Volunteers can choose between shared dorm-style rooms or private spaces, offering a balance of community and personal time. The setting, the food, and the people come together to create an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
